Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP are both in the UEFA Champions League play-off spots, with the Ukrainian side looking to make it two wins from two at their adopted home of Stamford Bridge.

Match News and Current Form

Shakhtar’s unbeaten start to their UCL campaign came to an end on matchday three as they disappointingly lost 1-0 to ten-man Inter Milan (W1, D1), putting them in danger of going back-to-back European main-draw encounters without scoring for the first time since October 2024. That contest remained goalless until the 77th minute though, so it is therefore unsurprising that the Ukrainian side’s games have been level for a league-phase competition-high 85% so far this season. Having fielded the youngest starting XI on average in the UCL main draw this term (24 years and 182 days), head coach Arda Turan will be relying on the youthful energy of his squad as they look to build on their positive home debut in west London, when they defeated AEK Athens 3-1 last month.

Like Shakhtar, Sporting lost on matchday three of the UCL (3-2 to LASK), so are in danger of losing back-to-back games in the competition for the first time since January 2025. They are targeting three successive UCL away clean sheets for the very first time though, with one of those two accumulated so far coming last season against eventual finalists Arsenal. Last term, the Lions went their furthest in the competition since the European Cup became the UCL in 1992, reaching the quarter-finals, and given that they are unbeaten in 12 matches on the road across all competitions (W7, D5), they're unlikely to fear this trip.

Head-to-Head History

The only two previous H2Hs went Sporting’s way (both 1-0), while the Portuguese giants have won seven of their eight meetings with Ukrainian teams (D1), but lost 3-1 on their only previous visit to Stamford Bridge in the 2014/15 UCL.

Betting Analysis

Given the ill-discipline shown in many of Shakhtar’s recent games, a red card here wouldn't be a surprise.
